Well, looks smart, but do you really see yourself lassoing your documents?
Would be nice to have a try, I must admit (-:

That just seems like a really namby pamby, indecisive/avoidance way of dealing with lots of information. The more I deal with computers, the more information I want conveyed in a concise and organizable manner. Flexible, searchable displays of data/information that can be referenced through a few datapoints are the best. Not even needing to organize and just being able to build subsets based on queries is a much better model. How can you even tell what all those little tidbits scattered on the desktop are? They don't have space to have complex naming. We spent all this time developing complex systems of language and mathematical symbols only to have people revert to pictograms? Unk, picture of child, picture of child go in pile with other picture of child. Screw that, I say enter data, or generate data that covers all the relevant information about a file, then query that data through a search. Give me all the photos that contain pictures of my child bobby with a cheerful expression on his face. Computer asks you to define your search. Yes, I'd like you to analyze any photos containing the word bobby for "facial features" that match the expression "cheerful". In other words we should be able to chuck all our massive amounts of information into the file, fairly unorganized, and let the computer do the sifting for us once we define our needs.
Is one hand moving a single cursor with a couple of buttons really more expressive than ten fingers wacking away with a million possibilities at the turn of a phrase. A picture can express 1000 words, but a few words can bring up a complex picture. Which is why I think the simplicity of language and complexity of raw data make a great team.

sorry i'm an expert on this - i've loads of piles of stuff in my house and can never find anything!!
whats required for the next gen interfaces is exactly as mr Frenzy says - decent searching based on automatically created metadata which in turn is based on some loose human requirements (google image search is a fairly basic but good example of something that will try to pull out relevant images based not just on the names of the jpg but of the page content that the jpg is embedded in)
does anyone actually have any of the fancy graphics stuff in XP turned on? the first thing i do after installing it is turn the interface back to looking as close as possible to NT4 - not just because i'm old fashioned but its significantly faster to use without the delays incurred waiting for windows to fade up or create trails because you moved them.
i'd actually prefer the polar opposite of this system where by my computer analyses my physical space and can tell me where my passport is by me entering a text based search

mind blowing, its a much more human way of interfacing with a computer.

I'm Skeptical II. It mostly seems to be a solution looking for a problem. They've gotten too close to a clever idea and are failing to step-back and re-evaluate - and it's a horrible idea having to organise piles, even your own. :)
I do all sorts of visual and musical creative pursuits for pleasure and for money and I find my always carried sketchbook is full of words, even when the idea is primarily visual in nature the starting point is nearly always a text sketch.
A better practical solution for right now along the text based search lines of Toms is to use Quicksilver (http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/) and text searches which can get you to anyfile/image/app on your system simply & quickly, often with no more than 3 or 4 clicks.
Quicksilver has catalogued all 3 of my hard drives; my brain has catalogued images and files etc as I create and use them and my fingers can get to anywhere in a moment using words. Simple text queries, often based on just a few letters bring up a custom built list of possibilities if I can't hit the file first time, which is rare.
On the other hand I'm now starting to worry where the heck my passport is!

LOL, it IS very cool i must admit.
BUT
can you imagine the piss-farting around that will go on in an office enviroment....productivity...no, faffing around with it....yes.
It would surely take some harsh managerial regimentation of the staff to get anything done with it.
i seen that on >click on the beeb a while back, canucks are developing it apparently.
