so when I started VJing openly about a year ago, I used a playstation 1 with MTV Music Generator (can anyone say CHEAP TITLER?) I used this in conjunction with vid mixer, computer, etc... so for those of us on a budget (aren't we all? ...naaw) don't dismiss this idea some very cool, real time FX can be squeaked out of the old PS1. so admittedly I was excited when they released a PS2 version of MTV Music Gen. as the PS2 has graphics horsepower to play w/ I figured the new MTV-MG would boast some ballsy graphics. Alas, I was sad to find that while fullscreened, MTV_MG2 applies a little tag (watermark) at the bottom corner, which MTV-MG1 does not. However, with some good timing on the record button, or take bar if you wanted, altho I wouldn't suggest using this method live, you can set up some very nice scenes using the fullscreen while in edit mode, this doesn't apply a tag.

So I was thinking... if japan is so very down with VJs:
A) why didn't Sony include a visualization program in the PS2 hardware ala the last two models of the PS1
B) with the PS2 having not only FireWire, but also USB (keyboards, mice, midi controllers, etc, etc) you could plug in a firewire HD loaded w/ content and have this... what I would THINK, would be a super standardized, graphics workstation, that CAME with full dual stick, all buttons analog control. so to all those out there in the industry... I dare ya! am I missing something fundamental here?

anyone ever play/use the game/software called Baby Universe? an import title for PS1 that is pure visuals

anyone have Glasstrons?

I agree using Linux on the PS2 is probably the best way to get the most out of it :)

effecTV and all the other effects seem to kick serious arse! I emailed the dev once, told me no gui yet, but effects obvously work w/in some environment. In other words, what soft/hardware config does one need to utilize these beautiful effects?

Sony originally planned to ship PS2's with built-in video capture, and the dev-kits still have svideo input sockets as they changed their minds at a late stage.

Now that would have been neat...

Has anyone here actually used Effect TV.... on a linux box or preferably on a PS2 ? I would really love a good excuse to take my PS2 to gigs with me... this is THE excuse. Do I need a linux kit to use effect tv? Hmm.... well, I can see now how I'm going to spend my evening. Google, here I come!

I would recommend an old PC so you can use some other alpha relese software that is working on Linux box. At this time the programs are in alpha state but in time this can be a good platform to be used by vj-s
I am useing old celeron 300 Mhz with aver media card and scan converter and this is more than enough all this is suck in rack case so it does not take much space. I cover all rock band with effect tv and other tools.
And if you aske me there is no need for GUI, because you have all the controls you need on the keyboard.

yep any old crappy pc will run linux - a p2 is about the minimum for effectv (you also need a brooktree based capture card - eg a wintv) and a scanconverter to output the video - you could get it running for about $50 using mainly parts from a skip!
