View Full Version : Piracy now funding Terrorism

So I was just watching an import Disc from the UK, and the "FACT" anti-piracy commercial with the fat demonic guy and the big burning "X" brand was on it. Now, I guess I can handle a little hyperbolizing/literal demonizing of pirates. But what the heck is up with making the statement "Piracy funds Terrorism." The drug war has always been fraught with this sort of guilt by association, but it seems callous and offensive to pull the "T" card on acts of economic crime when theoretically acts of real terrorism involve, well terror. I don't find a drop in economic gain to be a "terrorifying" situation.
More proof that ad execs shouldn't be allowed to deal with serious issues.

and then there are the terrorists funding the pirates (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/16/AR2006051601625_pf.html)
Of course when you have terrorist funding projects like "Total Information Awareness" (http://www.aclu.org/privacy/spying/15578res20030420.html)
it's not so difficult to see how terrorism is bandied about whenever the hawks want to demonize something...
So back to piracy..
I'm wondering when HD piracy will be available?

www.fact-uk.org.uk are really funny - they offer the most incoherent set of reasons why piracy is sooo bad. (and they have a really crappy domain name)
why can't they just tell the truth and say "Piracy costs our rich mates money, and there's nothing a rich bloke hates more than losing money"
All the cobblers about terrorism or my new favorite "Piracy funds benefit fraud" WTF?? i thought the government funded the benefits system? do people startup a housing benefit scam with the profits from selling DVDs down the pub?
what ever next?
"shoplifting funds pedophiles"??

We don't get that advert here in Australia. I reckon it'd be a fkn funny visual though - can someone pirate it and upload so I can be a terror vj?

I think the real question is - what DVD could you get in the UK that you couldn't get in the States???
That advert has been around for a couple of years - really rather terrible aint it. It makes me have more faith in the US and less in the UK if you guys haven't been subjected to such cr&p. Though I doubt it'll be too long before Bush blames global warming and inflation on The Axis of Evil/Arc Of Terror/Democrats/Hippies/Single Parent Families/Non-Far Right Christians/People not working for Haliburton.....
Not entirely unrelated, but taking the piss out of all this ridiculous hysteria, you should check out Brass Eye - excellent satire of over the top news reporting - made way before the state of the world as we know it...
