Well, today I just got my 30" Touchscreen Apple Cinema Display. It was a secret I had. It works fine but when I am running Motion Dive Tokio for example the resolution of Motion Dive goes to 640x480 so I have to recalibrate the screen to that resolution so I can run that software as a touchscreen application. It is a pain, in theory I thought it was simplier.
But the rest of the programs runs fine so far.

Apple's 30" Cinema Display is a touchscreen? Without a screen overlay? Does it track multiple fingers?
I have an LG touchscreen, but I find it useless as it only tracks one pointer at a time.
I'm saving for one of these (http://www.jazzmutant.com/lemur_overview.php), but if the Apple solution tracks multiple fingers, it looks more useful.

Even tho they 'look' cool, touch screens are fairly worthless for VJ softs, and I wouldn't spend real money on one.
If they ever simulate (real feeling)knobs with a touch screen, maybe I'll change my mind, but until then I'll stick with my endless knobs on my midi controller;)

have to disagree (though i totally get your point). depending on the use and situation touchscreens can be quite a nive interface to explore, if u are in mind and take advantage of their discrete (on/off) switching capabilities using their similar input/output surface u'r on the go, add a a couple of knobs and sliders for ur analog needs and... uhuuu!
my fav example would be my own baby::
loop-r (http://www.rux-werx-here.net/loop-r)and the newer looop-r (sorry for the shameless ads but it really illustrates my point!)
i don't believe apple displays have multitouch (yet) but it has neer been so easy and so much documented how to build ur own multitouch surface..

the loop-r looks great mate! adding some analog knobs really makes it more viable..
I still stand on my original statement tho..
On a purely multitouch surface(IE no knobs) how would one turn a virtual knob for example. Also, without the physical contouring of knobs and sliders, it seems you have to be watching your hnds doing the controlling more than the content your controlling(when you use a physical slider for example, you can move it up or down without having to watch yourself doing it)
There are of course some cool things one could do with multitouch interfaces, but then again there's cool things one can do with many other interfaces as well...

You wont be saying that after you've seen what me and my partner is VJ crime are working on ;)
Beats and bunch of MIDI and keyboard/mice combos you could fit on a desk.

that is one of the reasons i sayd i was seeing ur point. touch surfaces r still a bit away from haptic feedback (the physical feedback).
but knobs make sense physically probably not in a touch screen - there will be better interface widgets for that.
just for a bit of mouth wattering (and look in the already present future) check andrew fentem's impressive touch exploitations :: http://www.andrewfentem.com/

their is seriously no doubt the multitouchscreen technology is serious uber cool, and will even get cooler and more diverse in what will be achievable with it. Practically worthless for VJing was a poor use of words..
I see multitouch more for the drawing elements than for the controller elements. touchscreen is still 2D where physical control is 3D and 4D(in terms of joystick movements). Once touch screen screen take shape(literally) it will be something...

i totally agree with the feel of hardware, but the actual thought in a persons mind of interacting with a computer in a different way i feel personally it produces different results. the same way as the difference of using logic or a hardware sampler such as an mpc for audio. also i would like to see more interactive audio/visual artists using touchscreen to enhance their works and enable a stronger interaction with their audience. its kind of like the wow factor when you see or experience a new piece of technology for the first time and it always stays with you, giving a performance or an installation an extended longevity.

the same things happens on my gateway c-140x tablet pc, but motion dive and tablet / touch screen is quite fun ! even though i can only inupt / track one point it is still 10 times faster than a mouse ( plus it takes up less space )

very cool - how long until someone puts their hand through the screen playing with the basketball?

for an oldie like me, who still thinks a wireless mouse is cool, and being able to manipulate images in realtime is really cool; surely the cleverness of otherwise of the input side of a project is irrelevant to the outputside?
on the one hand you have a really fun/interesting/wow technological toy/tool for the operator - on the other 10,000 people in a sweaty tent at glastonbury high on their drug of choice think only one thing ---- oooh, look at the pretty lights!............:)
