renedering and text tools?

been providing the visuals for our small event that my friend and i promote using alot of bought clips and own footage through resolume. i'm now going to try and get into rendering my own images and making up some cool 3d logos with the events name.
as im new to this side of vj'ing i would appreciate any views on how to get started and any thoughts on good software to use.

I use adobe after effects for this kind of work. Sony's Vegas is also a good program for doing this kind of stuff.
