I am a student from portsmouth and am currently putting together a piece of work using still pictures, and photographs. I know this is not strictly vjing but because it has no moving video in it, however it is for my final piece i do not want to experiment with things i havnt used (ie video) too much in case i am shit at it.
however i would love some tips, eg . are there any 'rules of thum' to making still image vj pieces.
is there any where i could read up on the techniques to vjing.
thankyou
i am also looking for contacts or any one who would be interested in my work ... i am currently setting up a web site, whcih hopefully will be ready by spring..

VJ's do use pics too...not just video...often pics are used as masks...but, as for your project, I'd have a look into Arkaos..their bottom-line app (VMP) deals exclusively w/ stills...doing all sorts of effects to give them movement...I know other VJ apps can deal w/ pics nicely, but they are gonna cost you (I assume you are trying to do this without spending a bunch of money:)

We found that using mock simulation with still images (varying the length of time each appears on the screen randomly) worked well to fit them with music

But this is the only way we've used stills so far in our visuals.
Hope it's of some help.

I've done a few full live sets for Roger Eno using nothing but stills - his stuff almost dictates this! Long cross-fades work really well and of course, the content quality needs to be up to scratch as there is no movement to fool the viewr into believing that the clip is good!! Avoid stuff like powerpoint (Transitions are utter shite) and Director (Massive sledgehammer to crack a tiny nut) and put your stuff together in a NLE app like Premiere, Vegas or FCP. Simply drag the images in and put some lovely long cross-fades in, render it up and you'll be a happy customer. As for your comment about being "shit" with video - here's a tip: If you want to use video, just do it - if you don't, you'll still be "shit" at it in 5 years time!
