Last night a friend popped round and we were watching some music videos and noticed how VJ styling has been used in some of them. Some of the effects used could be considered inspirational, especially to the newer VJs and we are writing the post to get a reference point for newer vjs about what other vj's have done (especially as not many peeps are too happy about putting demos up!)

The ones we thought were most VJish were

Missy Elliot - 4 My People
Basement Jaxx - Bingo Bango

Just wondering if anybody else found inspiration from these videos and if anybody could suggest any others?

the latest red hot chili peppers video is made in a very similar style, that we are using sometimes.

sorry i don't know the exact name, but a lot of mirrors (quad/triple) are used... very psychedelic stuff

i also recognised a lot of videos that can be used as inspiration.
there's also a video from a rockband, which is performing in a room, where all walls 4 walls + celing are used as screens....
looks amazing. anyone knows this video?

Haven't seen Missy's latest, but all her videos (I've seen) are style-classics.

Ever since we lost "The Box" (caller-selected video channel) in NYC because of some corporate-cable-payola-FCC-anti-rap crap, I don't get to see her vids anymore....

Can you be a little more specific about what it was you liked in the videos? Editing? Time-shifting? Camera work?

Does anybody see the next stage of their career as directing music videos?

yuP! big dream of mine and the prime : it's the best and most fun way of working with video on the planet ..more commercial work would be very cool to get to tell you the truth more cash and more freaking for a bigger audience .

I've seen a excellent vid a few days back from Cassius: The Sound of Violence... a club-banger but with a video that just popped me an my man vinz out of our couch of how cool it was (please respect masters of vid-art: don't rip) pure and utter genius... and I don't say it a lot a must see

That's actually how I started...
I shot a video for my band. Then I thought I might just use the footage live...

i recently found out the bands name:

check out this video: hoobastank - running away
+ asian dub foundation - fortress europe

these two videos show me, that there's a lot more to creating visuals then doing the "standard" event projections....

have fun watching the videos...

There certainly are some excellent music videos around, two of my favourites have to be Tim Hope's video for Coldplay's Trouble and Shynola's work for Radiohead (Pyramid Song, Blipverts) and for James Lavelle: An Eye for an Eye. I think that a new generation of digital 'designer makers' are on the scene taking music video production from initial concept development right through to finished product, and are more importantly being given a lot of creative freedom by forward thinking labels.

I think that loads of music videos are resembling vj mixes much more. I think we could learn a lot from some music video directors by their use of narrative and characterisation. To be telling great stories live to music with a synthesis of film, animation and motion graphics and video. That's my heaven . . . :girly:
