I wonder if someone can help me, I have just bought a Sony TRV25 mini DV cam and am trying to capture footage using Premier 5 (a disc was given to me) the problem is that premier cannot 'see' my footage, when i try to record in the video capture screen i get this message 'Unable to open that file, File contains no audio or video, or is in use by another application
File path C:\temp11.avi'
I thought I could get round the problem by capturing using another editing program (Ulead, Muvee) as avi files, but when i try to import the captured video from my e: drive I get the same message as above. Vegas is also unable to 'see' or support these files.
However when I capture footage using Pixela and save as an Mpeg both Premier and Vegas are able to import the clips but they are of very low quality.
Does anyone know where I am going wrong?

I've just got one of those cams too - what a bargain! This could be a number of things, but I'm assuming that you are connecting your cam via Firewire to a capture card? (mine is optimised for the Sony Vaio, so this needs no configuration) First check all the "options" in your app (by the way, I would recommend Vegas over prem for a newbie - big time) if you are still no further on, check the options within your capturecard. I'm gonna take a look at this on my setup and will get back to you. Maybe tomorrow, as busy, but will!

I know this is gonna sound really thick, but what/where is my capture card and how can I configure it?
Edited to add that I am using Windows XP, could it be that premier 5.0 is too old for the OS.
I am also using Vegas Pro, but can't see an option for capturing video, I an only import clips from my hard drive

Ah!! How are you connecting your camera to your computer? Don't worry about sounding thick - we all go thru this!!!

give us a quick rundown on the computer you are using - is the firewire port added on, or did it come fitted from new?

Dell Dimension PC, Pent 4, 256 Ram, 40gig hard drive (30 left), someone fitted a Q-tec 510F Firewire PCI card last night. Windows XP home.
Need to know anything else?

Nope thats fine - my guess is that the firewire card aint talking to XP yet. Usually, you connect the camera and you get a little bleep from XP to tell u that its read it. I know nothing about PCI add ons, but reckon there will be a configuration page somewhere in "controll panel", if not, try re-installing the drivers for the PCI card. Whatever happens, XP will always let you know when a peripheral has been plugged in, if it doesn't, theres summit wrong with the installation OR configuration. Check thru these points and get back to me - can't guarantee such quick response all day, but I'll keep looking in!

I have no problems capturing from the other programs so I don't think the problem is with the capture card, I think its the fact that Prem 5.0 is too old to work with XP. I'm gonna download a trial version of 6.0 and see how it goes, and am also gonna look into using Vegas 3.0
Thanks for all you help.

You are probably right, but may I suggest that you also try Sonic Foundry's "Vegas3" It really is so much more intuitive to use, does pretty much the same job and is ?200 cheaper! There is a trial version you can download. Good luck!
