Being without a gig for a few months, I did a private party for a friend about a week ago, one of those gigs which really brings your ego down to earth. Back when I was doing a residency at Larumba, I was trying so hard to get hired at one of the better clubs in town, namely The Church or Vinyl. They regularly have big name DJs there that I would kill to VJ for and the clubs themselves are really nice. For months I tried to get my demo DVD in the hands of someone important, mailing them, going to the club passing them off to bartenders and door staff, but it was futile. I live across the street from the church and most every night i watch the line of people form down the block waiting to get in the door. Today, I am walking in to my building and a guy approaches me from across the street asking if I would be interested in helping get petitions signed in the neighborhood so that they could open yet another nightclub in the area, and they would pay me. I told them that I would do it for free if I could get a gig at the church. I ran inside and grabbed my demo, went over to the offices and showed it to a few of the important people, they talked with the owner and tadaaa! i have been promised a gig at the church, possibly also at Vinyl.....YAY!!! I am so happy, it's my dream come true.:D

VisionsUnleashed, this is what I meant when I said:
Hey, VU, this makes me think that there are two kinds of dating styles: one where you try to figure out what people want and try to become that, and another style where you just be who you are and let potential dates approach you....
You didn't understand what I meant at the time. Now maybe you see the analogy? ;)

Good work. But IMHO you're always selling youself shot doing stuff free for a commercial op like a bar. Its like anything - you (in this case the club) get something for cheap or free you don't appreciate it (ringing any bells??).
But a good deal cutting excercise there anyways - least the gigs might start rolling in.
