i had been asked by fellow vj friends in the uk scene to distribute the visual clips i have been vjamming at clubs like raya and soxan, for their own vj use.

though this made me question why i should do this, i realised that to allow progress for all within the burgeoning vj scene, there was no need to be elitist, and guard my output. we all seem to share and rip off stuff from wherever we can.....if a visual clip turns you on and allows you to say something then why not use it.

nowadays we are bombarded with visual imagery, invading our personal space wherever we go - by recording, re-packaging and recreating new audio/visual clips we can reclaim and express ourselves through this relatively new form of artistic expression. we can all become vjs and in the spirit of coldcut, we should all, "remix our televisions"!

so here are the first of a set of digitised clips that i have been playing around with and using at festivals and gigs since 1998-2002. they are a good sample as to what headspace vj mondo has been inhabiting, but are by no means exhaustive.

i have collated the clips into very approximate genres to form an initial five cd set as follows:

>cd 1 - spikey
>cd 2 - fluffy
>cd 3 - urban
>cd 4 - global
>cd 5 - clubby

the majority of visual clips have been created by myself from a variety of sources. generally the older jerky clips were roughly digitised from my old travelling 8mm cine footage in south east asia, the indian sub-continent and africa from the mid to late 1990's. more recent clips have been shot on dv and digitally altered in premier 6.0 etc.

as for the other clips, they have been begged, stolen and borrowed from a variety of sources without direct copyright clearance.....mostly uk television, etc (so use with discretion).

several clips are visual works that i have collated and adapted by video artists such as jeff brown, ben sheppee, pushkin, cp filum and lilliana - all regular raya contributers, as well as given clips that i like using, from vjs such as residual darkness and channel zero which fit my particular visual show. there are even clips i have no idea where they have appeared from - so apologies and thanks if you see your clip here!

the clips can be media cleaned for use with vjamm or other vj programs but be aware that resolution is low.

the clips have been digitised to 24 fps, 1 in 5 keyframes, approx 900 - 1200 kps data rate, cinepack.the clips are generally all mute and short (less than one minute) for general use at clubs.

please feel free to play/manipulate/show these clips as you wish... be aware of possible copyright infringements if you are planning to use for public performance, and remember to give credit where it's due for the sake of the artists and vjs who have spent time creating these clips.

enjoy

many thanks and respect to :

lisa, the raya crew, residual darkness, soxan, vjs.net, big chill, yeast directions,, cp filum, ica, future physical, uk-dance.org, vjs forum, audiovisualisers.com, russel@get lucky, jane@ocean, friendly scientist, jim@xfm, vector, coldcut, headspace, 2bittv, dfuse, indymedia, undercurrents, dedbeat, all you mad-eyed veejays, eyecandy punters and especially sonny for making it worth creating for.

nothing to add except these clips represent everything we love about armand. totally visually creative and fresh on a spiritual politico tip. he doesn't make wallpaper images and every frame says ?something?.

and great news for the fast developing vee jay world? they are mostly quick time movies (ie: a lot of software will run them.. including vee jay classics like vjamm, motiondive, director and powerpoint etc) we?ll be knocking them out on our web site soon. before then you can blag copies direct from armand or dave parkin. http://raya.org.uk for contacts.

all this for an only early bird price of four quid per cd-rom (or three if you haggle = includes p and p) for friends of raya and our associated cultural scene.

file under: an inspiring present for any budding vee jays in our lives

a really nice thing happened a few weeks back when armand (an incredible creative and visual force for raya crew) completed a breath taking project. open sourcing, for cheap as chips knock down prices, his own/stolen visual work to the world via cd-rom.

armand is a proper ?punk? now :) ?.and in his own words?.

Can I just add that if you haven't seen Mondo (Armand) do his thing yet, you need to see him do it soon. He's very good at it.

As for getting yer mitts on all his clips, well, it's too good an opportunity to pass up, I reckon. And the open-source spirit of what he's doing deserves respect and support. Yay for Mondo! :)
