Just wondering...
Would putting a (thin) screen in front of speaker stacks hurt the sound quality?

Dependent on the screen material.
I would go for accousticly transparent material. A normal screen will fuck the top and mid. but you're safe if its infront of a bin. Transparent screens will not harm the top or mid.

After some research, we went with spandex at the Quest in Minneapolis. The sound guys say they can't hear a difference, and I sure can't! =]

spandex is my new fave material, weve got a bit of spandex that fits our fastfold frame which we use in places where the venue dictates the screen has to be in a place where the punters can paw/burn with fagends etc. the screen. wish we'd been using it when some F**ker slashed our front proj sheet with a razor:(
now if only theyd make some spandex that wasnt UV reflective ....

Cheesecloth would do, but its not a great plan.
Speaker stacks add to the visual atmosphere, why hide them?
The layout of the venue in question means that the only way to get mutliple screens in at the front will be to put them in front of the speakers... It's just an idea we're toying with.
Thanks for the ideas everyone.

I've seen this done in Brixton Academy by Megadog (ahh, those were the days...) with massive stacks either side of the Stage, I believe that they used white material that we used to know as 'scrim' when I worked in lighting, I don't know if that's its proper name. Basically it's relatively coarsely woven cotten (or something) so there are lots of holes to let the sound through.
Your main problem will probably be the sound guys, rather than any sound degredation.
But it does look good.

I use nightgown/longerie(sp?) material for all my screen needs... its somewhat stretchy in one direction, is easily front or rear projectable, comes 9' wide and however long ya need it, its cheap, and relatively sturdy... ask at any decent fabric store. enough for two 9'x12' screens cost me around 25 bux

VirtualVisuals is right...they are called Scrims and yes they are used all the time to project visuals on front of Speaker stacks..
..guns n roses uses them...a hell of a lot of theatre productions do too..
one neat trick ive seen done with scrims is the "holographic" video effect..(a la star wars) where video is back-projected on scrims hanging infront of a stage and when a light gets turned on behind the scrim the scrim becomes invisibe to the audience.
