View Full Version : A.V.I.T. North America Planning OFFICIALLY underway

AVit 2003 will be in Chicago, IL USA
We are still finalizing actual dates although we are looking at the end of the May 2003.
If you are interested in coming out please send an email to niky@simplistiks.net
As the beginning steps of our planning we are of course looking into some very promising venues as well as propositioning ourselves to sponsors. This is where you come in. We are compiling a list to show these potential sponsors/exhibitors what we are using. Hopefully they will see the need to be there because we already use their equipement or because we are not... therefore they need to show us why we should.. right?
We are respecting the underground movement in this regard... don't worry about letting this get too "corporate" but if we can get help from say a projector company... then all the VJ's would pass over that responsibility of bringing a beamer... so this will work out to be a very happy medium between underground and corporate help. first things first... I'll leave it there for now.

All right, now where talkin...
I would think any sponsership would be great, corporate or not...
It seems like everyone I talk too these days are seeing the VJ explosion becoming more and more of a thing, and sponsers are in that boat as well...

So if anyone out there can find AVit NA sponsership, You will be well rewarded..

The Main thing to do now is get off our rear ends and start doing things to get this going...

Matt @ VisualAudio has a line on setting up free 800 number phone conferences, so AVIT NA will start having weekly phone conference meeting starting very soon...More On that later...

Another big thing to do, is finding ppl in the AV business that has useful job and media connections, (for all of us not working in the field as much as we would like too) and setting up these contacts to be represenatives at AVIT.. Anyone with contacts to Moonshine and other potential AV record companies needs to see if they can get them interested in being part of this...

well, I am happy to see this officially under way...

AddictiveTV are part moonshine's DVD VJ section.
I guess they could break the ice for you...

sounds good. im into helping make this happen.. ill keep an eye on this thread..

as far as dates go, are we talking spring, summer ? just curious.

it would be great to see this event reach out to other established groups in the chicago area that are doing independent/experimental media events ... lumpen, select, etc. this would be a great avenue to expand the awareness of an AVIT event beyond the realm of just vjs and video ppl.

of course, the sound component of the event is very important. im curious to hear ppls thoughts in regards to what format this should take .. i feel it is important to allow each artist to have input over what feel the soundtrack to their video set has.

coolio, looking forward to seeing how things progress.

best,
ric.

thanks, sounds good... during that timeframe,a venue with an outdoor component would rule the roost. imho.

In response to peoples suggestions...
As far as having select in Chicago involved: we are already working with them in having a "Special AVit Issue" produced. Hopefully soon so we can present this to possible sponsors.
The outdoor component will be utilized during the day conference as we have a space that is connected by a rooftop in which we can use as a sitting/projection area.
Things are moving very quickly along here which is very good... and considering we are all so far apart in the states opposed to the guys in Leeds... most of the planning is going to be pretty central to the midwest. This is why the forum is a nice place to share advice/suggestions and etc.
As far as what we are looking at for music... We are definately going to have one room for Drum n Bass / Breakbeat / Trip hop being that we have some big names available in this genre from NYC. And we will have a good mix of house & techno for the Chi-town kids... this is going to pull the most people in chicago. We are definately planning on incorporating Live A/V Pa's as they are so readily available when we all start getting together.
As far as picking your genres... yes! Let me know what your flavor is. I am kind of taking on the role of Artist Coordinator here... among other things... but once again if you are interested: email me your info (where you are, a description of your rig, music pref, whatever you want me to know about you :) . niky@simplistiks.net
THANK YOU!

As some of you know I have been working on a A/V tour for over a year now. I have built some relationships with sponsors and I have mentioned this event to a few of them.
I will be mixing video live for two sponsors at this years NAMM (National Association of Music Makers) show in LA and another sponsor at NAB in vegas. All sponsors have mentioned that they see the value of VJs and the growing market.
NAMM will be a good time for me to give them an actual proposal for the event.
I have experience creating proposals and I would be happy to work on it, but I would need some details about locations, arts, dates, audience, etc.
I am also talking to them about a Lumens Tour stop in Seattle around the beginning of May.
Lumens tour is similar in concept to AVIT but on a multi-stop level. One stop on the tour is Chicago. www.lumenstour.org
Right now is a difficult time to get sponsorship. With the economy being tight no one wants to spend money on markets that aren't immediately profitable.
I have been speaking to marketing managers for some time and they all say the same thing.
Not to be negative, I do believe it will turn around soon. These people need to see events like this happen so they can understand it.
So many people in the industry (by industry I mean hardware manufacturers of the gear we use) don't understand what a VJ does. They just know the gear gets used at live events.
VJ software developers are too small to put a lot of resources behind a big show.
However, I do think there is a place for them to help out. In my opinion they should get just as much attention as a hardware sponsor but for a smaller price. The software developers are the ones who have helped this scene out more than any other organization and they should be reward for that.
What I am proposing to this group is that Lumens Tour picks up one day of the weekend as a Lumens Tour date. Say AVIT is Saturday, Lumens Tour will be Friday night. Many of the artist performing for the Lumens Tour would be there for AVIT.
Please let me know if this is something the group would want to do.
Please post freely, I would understand if you don?t want to collaborate on this. I would still want to be apart of AVIT but on a personal level.
BTW, I have expressed to all of these sponsors that I brand through experience and association not through tons of banners and ads through out the venue.
They have to understand that logos blended into a VJ mix can ruin an experience for an audience and the artist.

Yes Grant!!
You are totally right on about the software developers..
They have been the ones that have spured on what is now being called the 'VJ revolution' and with out there contributions, we all would just be video enthusiasts...

In regards to AVit NA, I personally would recomend Grant to be one of the main funding/sponsership organizers, as he, (and others he is involved with in the Bay area) has been involved with many major VJ and visual events thru the years, and really has a very good business approach and repore with those that could help get the money rolling...

I personally welcome the Lumen's Tour to be a part of AVit NA, and would also like to see others with similar idea's and tours involved with AVit..

Just a note to say that AVIT online is also officially underway... just these things take time!

Same VJC open-publishing self-administering spirit, but aimed to providing the environment to get these events up, running and documented. You'll be able to log-in with your VJC details, sign up to the relevant event and take it from there...

At the mo, we've got the site up and are plugging in the bits we'll all need and working out just what hacks are required... as well as 750 photos from AVIT UK'02 in a gallery.

Email me if you want further details.

And merry Christmas one and all!

Hello Everyone,
Happy New Year!
NEW DATE for AVit North America is June 6 and 7th, 2003.
Location: Chicago, IL USA
Keep in mind that Pixy is doing his Crown Chakra show shortly after for anyone that might be interested.

Screw the penny ante sponsors, why not get AMD, Intel and Motorola? I mean they are the ones that power most of the visuals. I know they love stuff that pushes the limits of processor power because that means more sales for them. Not sure how easy it would be to pitch to large corporations such as those, but just maybe...

vjnixmix

AVit North America is definately rolling along here and I am happy with the progress so far. With Pixy's help we will be coming up with Proposal "Brochures" which will be 4-color booklet about 8-10 pages long. It will describe AVit and leave room for several bios on artists involved. We will be sending these out to the numerous contacts that we have as potential sponsors. If you know of anyone who you think should really get one... please let me know.
Our next goal is the webite. I am hoping to utilize some of the templates for AVit UK and waiting on reply re: that. Otherwise it is our goal to have the site up by early Feb.
Things are looking good

VJC logo, or maybe something like a TV icon?
Or what about something like the little zooming beamer thing at the electronica-optica site? those are groovy

vjpixylight
13th January 2003, 12:06 AM
well since AVit is a VJc sanctioned event, I would feel better using the VJc logo over the E-O beamer..and besides, radley would have to let us use it the E-O beamer..

If Radley okays the beamer logo use, then what do you think?? VJC logo or E-O beamer???

vjpixylight
13th January 2003, 12:35 AM
Actually AVit is a VJC event, so the logo would be perfectly valid...
As far as the language that is on there, this is totally open to what we want to put there..If we even want a statement there..

The use of say the V4, would be a selling point for sure, trouble is, if we only go with one product like that, then we won't court any other sponser's...

Maybe Roland would be one company to hit up as well, as it is the V5 that is on this cover..

13th January 2003, 12:40 AM
one more thing, The AVit logo needs to express the North America in it... does anyone know who made the original AVit logo, and can we get him or her to add North America to it??

kommy
13th January 2003, 12:41 AM
you could do collage style with a bunch of different products, from all the companys who are sponsering, just an idea

kommy
13th January 2003, 12:43 AM
oh and you could probably find an appropriate font and add n. america your bad self.

vjpixylight
13th January 2003, 12:49 AM
well the thing is kommy, we are in search of sponsership and are using the Proposal "Brochures" to do this...

As far as finding that font, well, does anyone know the name of that font?

vjpixylight
13th January 2003, 01:03 AM
thanks for the offer kommy. Actually one of my VJ partners did the graphics on this, (as he has all good proggies to do this kind of stuff) and I really think we should stick to this as a base to work from. I would agree with you on the font, but since it is going to be a logo that we use more than for just this, (IE web sites and flyers ect), I think we should make it a one font logo...

oy, oy, oy !

dont loose the flower !!! it looks great just like that,
otherwise it looks too old school,
I think you've just got the right balance between all the current styles, pixy...

a bit of wire frame, the AVIT logo to keep the continuity, the mixing hand for the live element, the statement for the "artiste" VJs, and the flowers for us japanese house music queens...

 :love2: :girly: :smurf:

oh boy, this is going to be difficult to please everyone...
I think we should let Nixmix decide what the final should be, and go with that...

And thanks Anyone, you got the drift of what Doug and I had in mind with the compositing. You have a good Good Eye!!

wierd - i replied to this thread with the new logo and artwork stuff attached and it ain't here, so i haven't had any email reminders either... rats!

in short, as the uk crew/avit originators events overtook us and we didn't get the visual/design side of it to a level we were happy with, so we've been developing some stuff in the loose hours since... we've got some cool artwork of the 'avit family', mr and mrs vj and their dog, the idea being that avit is about the people of the VJC/ommunity.

i'll get a link up soon once i've worked out why it bombed the message last time.
