i just got back from burning man. luckily i managed to find the time and motivation to do three gig's while i was there. this is the first time i have actually performed at bm although i was there last year.

i was originally going to play at "opulent temple" - a very large theme camp with an outdoor dancefloor. sadly i wasn't able to meet the right people at the right time so that didn't happen. it seems to be that way at burning man - it's generally very difficult to meet people and get organised. especially when there are a lot of other more interesting things going on! ;)

instead i performed two three hour sets at "Apollo By Day Dionysus By Night" to lovely music and a good sized audience. this was both on monday and thursday night. the setup was probably once of the nicest interms of visibility at bm. they had two large screens right next to the dance floor. the setup was a bit basic. not mixer just a loop throught which required a bit of fiddleing while the screens went blank.

I was also made aware of the "lucid revolution" camp via the burning man eplaya forum and ended up playing there on thursday. that was great fun and i met some very interesting people, but on the downside not so many people showed up. jordan who was coordinating the vj side of things had a very nice setup with a v4 and dvd players, as well as a preview monitor. so all i had to do was plug in. the screen was also a fair size and had a good placement.

one of the things that made it very appealing for me to perform at bm is that i managed to prepare a number of clips while i was there - using video footage and stills from the festival. i think that also made the visuals more relevant for the audience.

now my laptop is caked in dust - along with everything else i brought (including me). but it still works. i think with a bit of care it is possible to bring your equipment to bm and return it in a working order. laptops seem to be fairly robust anyway. i know a number of people who brought one and no one had a problem so far. at one point i left mine in the car and it got so hot i couldnt touch it anymore - but it still works!

some pics it took at bm here (http://www.morishuz.com/images/bm05/index.html)

Thanks for the pics mate
I spent some time sorting through the photo archives on the BM website just before the event. Spewin I missed it. Gee the amount of VJ content in a three mile radius - HUGE!

Im bummed that I missed all the live web streaming too:sad:

Did Dax ever get that VJ camp together?

I went and did the 'burning knot', with a group of regular colorado burners who didn't make it out this year..

we burned a big knot of cotton rope that was wrapping all sorts of goodies stuck in a 10 lbs. ball of wax.. The highlite was when one of the dogs attacked this knot after it had fallen off the chain holding it up and into the fire..(the dog unbelievably was unharmed save a few burnt hairs:))

anyhow, we talked about many things BM for next year, and decided that an 'art car' visual installation was where it was at!

Any video/art cars did you see?

i think he set up the opulent temple stuff but he was never there when i looked for him so i didn't get to vj for them.

arts car visluals? not a bad idea. but i suspect that building and arts car is going to be a bit of work in it's own right.

i wish i had a year and unlimited money to build some cool stuff for next year. also, i could do with living closer to burning man. san francisco is where it's at, clearly. anyone know of any jobs going in SF? ;-)

Space Cowboys have had the Unimog for a while - a Military Uitility vehicle with two screens that unfold from the sides with projectors behind them and a DJ Booth inside. Unfortunately, when I saw them last year the visuals were rather bleh (don't know if they have room for a VJ in there). Would be awesome to do the Pile 'o' TVs as a car - how much juice do you think we'd need to run all of those? Maybe we'd need a gennie on board for them.

I did BM this year. Mostly at my own camp. I went to lucid but they were having massive tech diffuculties when I was supposed to play. Was supposed to do OT on friday night but I left early for the playa for set-up and did not hear from Dax in time. I met many VJs while doing sets at my camp. Most were diggin modul8 and were shocked I brought my G5 to the playa. Happily it seems to have weathered it with no issues despite the fact that some lovely from Birmingham spilled a full drink on my table. My mixer is a bit crunchy though. Maybe I saw you there. I was at Pangea, 7:15 on the esplanade, under the Soul in the Machine stage (lots of stainless steel, LEDs, and lucite MIDI triggers.). I had 3 vid screens at the back of the enclosed structure.

my brain is fuzzy

if I remember correctly, the DO actually have a vj-spot, in the front compartment where you drive. The dj booth is on top, looking out ofthat orange bubble thing...
had a video mixer and moniters and stuff. not really alot of room for more stuff (your own kit) suppose you could put a laptop in your lap...they surely had a dvd deck or two in there.
they just played pre-recorded stuff last year.

(the unimog saved my life)
