i just got back from burning man. luckily i managed to find the time and motivation to do three gig's while i was there. this is the first time i have actually performed at bm although i was there last year.
i was originally going to play at "opulent temple" - a very large theme camp with an outdoor dancefloor. sadly i wasn't able to meet the right people at the right time so that didn't happen. it seems to be that way at burning man - it's generally very difficult to meet people and get organised. especially when there are a lot of other more interesting things going on! ;)
instead i performed two three hour sets at "Apollo By Day Dionysus By Night" to lovely music and a good sized audience. this was both on monday and thursday night. the setup was probably once of the nicest interms of visibility at bm. they had two large screens right next to the dance floor. the setup was a bit basic. not mixer just a loop throught which required a bit of fiddleing while the screens went blank.
I was also made aware of the "lucid revolution" camp via the burning man eplaya forum and ended up playing there on thursday. that was great fun and i met some very interesting people, but on the downside not so many people showed up. jordan who was coordinating the vj side of things had a very nice setup with a v4 and dvd players, as well as a preview monitor. so all i had to do was plug in. the screen was also a fair size and had a good placement.
one of the things that made it very appealing for me to perform at bm is that i managed to prepare a number of clips while i was there - using video footage and stills from the festival. i think that also made the visuals more relevant for the audience.
now my laptop is caked in dust - along with everything else i brought (including me). but it still works. i think with a bit of care it is possible to bring your equipment to bm and return it in a working order. laptops seem to be fairly robust anyway. i know a number of people who brought one and no one had a problem so far. at one point i left mine in the car and it got so hot i couldnt touch it anymore - but it still works!
some pics it took at bm here (http://www.morishuz.com/images/bm05/index.html)
