Hey VJs!
I read thru most of the articles and post
-ings, but still don't know what for to go!
If you could decid between a
VIDEONICS MX-1
or a
BLAUPUNKT DVM 2000 (aka PANASONIC WJ-AVE 5)
which one would you prefer?
And please tell me reasonable prices for each mixer!
(I could get the Videonics for EUR 250.- for example...)
thx a lot.

...imo if you can get an mx1 (in good condition) for just 250 EUR: stop thinking & buy it.
(if you're getting your mixer via ebay make sure it's a pal - not ntsc!)

if it's that cheap, I guess it doesn't hurt to try! I'm glad I tried the MX-1 before I bought one, I found it totally unacceptable for VJing. The AVE5 doesn't have as many inputs but might be a better buy, depending on what you're looking for. Chances are you'll buy a mixer, use if for a while, find your style, and buy something else to match.

@ morph:
why did you find the MX-1 so unacceptable for VJing? Because of the crossfader's latency, I read about? Why is the Panasonic a better buy (what are your reasons for that) ? thx.

I'm not morph - he loves the MX-1, and lives in aus.
I found the t-bar lag not just too long for my taste, but downright unusable, as in I couldn't tell what effect what I'd just done had made till a couple seconds later, so making adjustments was maddening. I also use luma into the dark areas in my mixing, and the MX-1 does it into the white. I'm told this can be changed, but I couldn't figure out how to do it after staring at the manual for an hour, and I was in the middle of the set, so I just yanked it and put my mx20 back in. I like the panasonics for the simple fact that they WORK. They do what they say they'll do, every time, with no delay. Seems like a simple enough request of my gear...

the ave5 is imho faster and more intuitive to operate, no features hidden in submenues, but it still lacks chromakey
and.... yeah i know, pretty obvious, but i'm not called hamageddon 4 no reason ;)
but did u take the hama dvm1000 into consideration? if u live on a limited budget, this unit may be an alternative

We use both an MX1 and AVE5 for our live performances. If I had to leave one at home it would be the AVE5, for two reasons:
the two inputs on the ave are not enough for us.
The chroma and luma key
Despite the time lag on the fade, I would recommend the mx1, unless you have no need of the chromakey, or need to switch between sources quickly.
The ave5 is certainly simpler to use, and all of the wipes/fades on the mx1 are good, but you'll probably find (like me) that you end up using only a couple of them on a regular basis.
Hope this helps

i echo what hama said, for a newbie the dvvm definitely has best bang for the buck ratings under ?200 for a svideo quality mixer with chroma and luma ...beat that panasonic....
just dont beat up on them too much, theyre not the most hardiest of bits of kit.

I started to mix with a a blaubunkt dvm 2000 (AV5). It's a cheap and fast mixer, but besides switching , blending and wipe effects you can't to anything(with some textvisuals superimpose is fine)
Now i work with a videonics mx-1 i like the chroma/luma key you get for the price(can't afford a mx50, fast and good luma/chroma), and if i want to do some fastswitching i use software.
It's also cool to use both mixers at one time.
