tonights gig was the first time everything went smoothly and i really started to have fun and loosen up. Arkaos worked perfectly and i was eager to try my new clips especially since i learned how to scratch video in Arkaos just yesterday. My visuals looked SO much cooler because i used much of my own content this time and the clips that were suited to scratching were finally shown as they should be. The crowd really got into it and by the end of the night a bunch of people were up on stage dancing all around me. Instead of standing up there with my head buried in my gear, i took some breaks to turn around and dance with the girls, switching the V4 over to the camera feed coming from my helmet. It looked cool because they were in front of the screens and it made for a nice infinity effect. Soon, guys and girls were all trying to get their 15 seconds of fame in front of the camera...girls kept asking me to put them on camera and everyone was dancing as if they were going to win something. Before, at my first gig, it really bothered me when people would try and interact with me but i stopped being uptight tonight and just partied down with them and it was so much fun. It didn't even bother me after the 5th person asked me to play some song for them. One girl asked if she could push the buttons (gasp!) and i said sure, what the hell....she pushed a few keys, thanked me and went away thinking what a cool guy i was. I realized tonight that it's really about having fun and creating a fun atmosphere, not about taking everything so deadly serious. If i stopped to talk to someone for 10 seconds it was no big deal...the important thing is to make people like me. There was one instance where a drunk frat boy type knocked on my helmet and it was a perfect time to ignite a well aimed fireball just above his head. He just stepped back and never bothered me after that...one of the security guys and a bartender saw it happen and were laughing their asses off. At 2am 3 different groups of girls asked if they could get a picture with me as if i was a celebrity lol. I met a bunch of cool people and some of my old friends came out to see the show. It was just really fun.
I set up the front of my rig with junk TVs in and around a shopping cart i, uh, found and filled the cart with real bananas. I also created a dvd loop to play just for those tvs of a gorilla drawing i made with floating bananas that said Sketchy J on them. I really like the fact that the club gives me free reign to create my act however i like....the artistic aspects like the bananas or my mask or whatever else is what are half the fun. I want to continue trying to push the boundaries of what a VJ does and create art beyond just video content. http://tinypic.com/5vqfzp

keep it going sketchyJ. :yep:
Really good to read what you're doing, and how you taking 'vj' into a real performance act.

It does reminds me just a little of a "band" I used to tour with more then 10 years ago...(well if you can call it a band..).
Their music was being desribed as: INDUSTRIAL SAMPLECORE MUSIC FOR THE UNDEAD.:scared:
There was one performer, he was fire-spitter and entertaining the crowds, dancing in weird blacklight and painted allover his body .
One gig (DENMARK) I was standing in the crowds and I shaved his head during performance.
He also made himself a wierd mask, with a big slurf!.
Also there were film-projections, 8mm.
Actually that got me into VJ-ing, I was really inspired by these projections.
Writing this I remember I have been dancing myself as well in this band, a few times.
We wrapped ourselves in plastic thin foil and we made steel (welded) odd-shaped bra's, inspired by madonna's.
We put red LED lights in them, looked funky, and easy to make!

ahh the good old times.

that sounds really cool...i would love to have seen it....
i wish the DJs would get in on the act, when i'm there a lot of people don't even realize that there are DJs up there spinning music...it would be nice if they could share the stage with me but i think they like it up there in the booth...
but yeah, i really like it when i go see a band that puts effort into providing something interesting to look at...it really adds to the experience....
Marilyn Manson comes to mind and also ICP (here comes the ICP hate mail!)...also a band called My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult.....
once i saw sir mixalot (baby got back) play a show at a small club here in denver and he had 4 beautiful girls in string bikinis standing at the front of the stage and during the entire set they just stood there and aimed real shotguns at the audience....it was such a cool look!....his music sucked but i will always remember those badass bikini girls pointing shotguns and how it made the show fun
