I'm still very new to this whole VJ-ing thing, so forgive me if this is a stupid question - but I'd like someone to recommend me a good video codec to use for clips to be played with Resolume.
I've tried DiVX 5.02 (doesn't work - division by zero error when I try to load the clip) and Intel Indeo 5 - does work but it's a little slow. I left the quality at 100%, though - maybe it would be faster if I compressed the files a bit more to reduce disk access?
Any other good codecs I should try? Would a SCSI harddisk help speed things up?
I use really short 320x240 clips, mostly in the 1-5 seconds range.
cheers,

for resolume, go for a codec that is low overhead like DV codec(for higher rez video),or cinepak or sorrenson for 320X240...only problem with cinepak and sorrenson, is that they take much longer to encode...;)

the resolume folks recommend midivid performance codec. So do I. Works beautifully.

Cheers! The Midivid performance codec works very well. What settings do you recommend?
I get good results with 90% quality and a keyframe every frame, but maybe I'm not squeezing most out of it.

That's what I use as well, works great for me, no need for "squeezing"... (though I'm usually at 320x240)

Don't use DV codec for vjing - it is an interlaced codec and thus is not suitable for displaying on non interlaced vga monitors - use fullframe cinepac or indeo with no fields

I'm a bit confused about the Midio Codec that is best suited for Resolume. In their site there are 2 codecs: MVbeta106 and the MIDIVID MV3. I installed these on my PC and in Premiere i got 3 new codecs: MidiVid 3, MidiVid Lossless and MidiVid VQ Performance Codec. So, when you are talking about the Mideo codec, wich one are you exactly refering to as the best codec for resolume?

We recommend using the cinepak codec which is by far the fastest codec for playback in resolume. But it has problems with subtle gradients so check and see how it does with your footage. If it looks too ugly use the indeo 5.1 codec which has a better image quality but is slightly slower.

are you guys also limiting the data rate? what KB/sec do you use?
and Bart, have you compared Cinepak with the Mideo (midivid performance) codec?

Midivid Performance codec is in fact nothing else than a optimized cinepak. It opens alot faster and plays back a little faster.
