I thought it would be nice to have/attempt some offical awards for the VJC/F as it is approaching the end of the year.

Software Application Of 2002, etc, etc.

Maybe we could have a collection of them (s/w, h/w, most annoying member, etc, etc)

It will make VJC sound so official.:)

All other magazine/industries do this sort of thing we should too.

What you think ppl.

To be honest I find the reviews a bit of a mish-mash as I know the nice community side of VJC but ppl are only going to review things they like. Not much mileage in alll 4-5 star reviews on objectivity.

Maybe we could choose what we think is the best!!??!

The debate door opens.......

Well your right about most ppl only reviewing stuff they like but thats why the comments are there (I personally try to be pretty fair with both positive and negative aspects on the reviewed item in a review)...... as for seeing what popular with most ppl, just take a look @ the actual rating numbers (rather than the stars) I mean thats why the ratings are there... mind you it would be nice to see more ppl rating s/w & h/w to give more clout to the rating.

Basically I don't think we need any more polls, etc... and I think we already have the tools to do what your talking about (BTW I think the awards idea is GREAT :) ) ppl around here just have to start bothering to use them!!

I like the Idea of giving an award to the best sw/hw of the year
since this community is growing and doing events like the avit it could be interesting for the developers what we, the users are thinkin about. In this case it would be interesting to start a kind of contest like the best vj loop or some sort of. Maybe this is to late for this year but the next one is comming.

cheers
Daniel

What catageories should we have?

Maybe a panel of the most repected/regular/knowlwdge members could choose the 'winners' rather than a free for all.

(One day maybe we could have a review panel for all the new stuff rather than random postings all of 4 stars)

Hopefully too it will encourage s/w devlopers esp to send in free copies of teh S/w to VJC so the 'staff' can review. As what happens with other sectors and it makes VJC a more credable/important source. Dunno maybe thinking too far ahead here.

Best Mac soft, Best PC soft, Best mixer, Best FX unit, Best secondary hardware (scannies, controllers, etc...), Best new Software feaure, Best emerging technology. Maybe Best DVD/VCD unit??? I don't think we should be giving out awards for best VJ or VJ performence or anything like that, far to subjective

AT this early stage the best VJ award is a little too subjective/touchy.

Best clip is a nice ideabut again next year this will be a rush as it is.

I would like to see it next year though. :)

But best DVD/Video would be doable though. Subjective true but would be nice to see.

Yeah I guess rating the VJ mix DVD/vids would be cool..... although as I said above I would prolly more concentrate on tech awards (which I would be happy to help judge :) )

I would be happpy to have my hand in this too but probably focusing on the computer generated side of things as that is the area I know most about.

I think the eventual team should have a backstage area of the forums to discuss this as it will be cluter for all the rest.

ANyone elses thoughts.

i thought about this quite a lot during the early stages of avit, but it got sidelined by the snowball logistics it developed

VJC awards or something similar will definately come in time, the question is how to organise them so they are fair, relevant and ideally bring the community further together... imho it would be wrong just to have them decided by an elite and posted up, that would make them irrelevant.

if we could have some sort of shoot-out and awards night, that would be super-cool!

how about a panel of jundges that are elected by the members of vjc ? this would sidestep the issue of eliteisum and allow the judging group to actually find a winner + it would give the awards a certain level of respectability if they were handed out by an elected panel.

i think its very important that the community continues to be able to review products and post reviews but if we're to hand out awards then it is important that they mean something and are not judged by newbee vjs who don't have the experiance to judge if a product is truly good or not

i agree on the award s thing, it will be another thing that will give us more credebility as it brings us more into line with the way other industries operate.

i also agree that although it would be nice to give awards to ppl trying to do a vj of the year, and necomer of the year might be problematical, although the inaugural lifetime achievement gong should definitely go to X for setting the whole ball rolling in the first place.

one award to a person i would like to see would be amost helpful advice award, so we can all vote for the old hand who's got us out of some tight spot with a gem of wisdom(you know who you are)

maybe a simple best show where we put in the visual experience we.ve enjoyed the most rather than a specific vj (which could get messy) for example a lot of ppl have been bigging up the Dj shadow show, i personally would nominate one giant leap at glastonbury, or maybe even AVIT UK 02 .
a lot of these award shows have a mix of panel awards with one or two where the audience as a whole votes, maybe "the Years Best Visual Experience " would be a good one for that.

sounds great :) just throwing some ideas which came to my mind: maybe a panel could nominate 3 "thing" for each category and then everyone could choose the winner? or is it too much troubles? polls on VJF have never really been successful but it will be probably work better if there are 3 choices rather than 20... OR we could do like the webby awards, with one "popular" winner and one winner selected by a panel? hmm maybe that would be confusing.

a panel is probably the easiest way to go but it would make sense if the community could also be included in the choice somehow. tom's suggestion of electing the panel makes sense, although i don't know how such a thing could be setup.

the way that genral clubs elect people here in the uk is that anyone can stand for election - they would be nominated by one person and need 3 members to second them and they would have to sort it all out before an agreed date. When you have a list of people who have been nominated and seconded then you have a vote where all the members can choose who they want on the panel

(we could let each member have one vote or we could let them have 2 or more votes if need be - maybe we should fix the panel at say 5 people and let each member have 5 votes)

after the deadline for voteing then the candadates with the most votes win and are elected onto the panel they hold the position for one year and then they have to stand again

After read a thread on projectors.

X I would suggest VJC hock up with a website like projectorcentral.com to help pay for the site but I know you views on advertising etc.

Sponsered awards etc for projector etc. Maybe even get some more expect knowledge joint venture for this.

Just some thoughts.

I think it would be fun to do a awards thing. You could set up awards like most helpfull, most comments, old school, most opinonated, class clown, rookie someone said. and whatever else people could think of. Then you could set up an email or post and have everyone vote on who they think the topic fits they could send a email and where the topic gos have them put who and what topic they think they are. then you wouldnt have to open it and just go down the list and count everything up. Thats the easiest way i can think of how to do it

Peace I'm out
