View Full Version : split software forum into mac/pc?

I'd like to suggest the "software" forum be split into mac and pc specific forums.
Have a strict policy on both that "platform wars" are irrelevant and will be deleted.
if someone wants to ask which is better for vj'ing mac or pc, it can go in "just starting" or somewhere else?
any opinions?

Come on.
I don't think this will help.

i think its a bad idea - most software questions tend to be platform independent things like 'why do my divx files not play well?' - the answers are relevent to both user groups even if the specific software is mac only
more specific questions about individual apps should really be asked on the software in questions support group
the mac / pc thing is annoying but i don't think there is any real solution (well other than linux :))

While I think it's interesting to see what's going on on other platforms, I've often seen posts on VJ central where someone asks a software question, assuming everyone knows what platform their running on. Only after several posts from both Mac and PC users does the original poster clarify their platform.
Having separate software forums would not only help resolve this issue, but also assist people who are searching though old posts for platform specific solutions. (right now it's platform soup :)
Having a separate forum for cross platform issues, such as codecs, may be a good idea as well.

could subforums be a solution - a main software forum and then subforums for mac, windows and at some point linux?

How 'bout a subsection devoted simply and exclusively to "Platform Wars?" After all, it seems that many of us on the boards actually relish these inane debates - yours truly included - on occasion. Admit it! We love our machines and seem to derive a sordid sense of pleasure by bashing the other platform! We could split all threads that go toward these wars to the "platform wars" forum! Like Kraftwerk says "It's more fun to compute!" :D ;) :P

That's pretty much what Ars technica does, they have "mac/windows/linux" forums and "The Battlefront" for platform wars.
I think this does help. There are a few people on these boards that can't resist making snide comments on any thread about macs. Splitting it this way should help I think.
If you are asking for technical help it is always platform specific eg the solution to why my divx won't play will be different on mac than windows.
But it looks like I'm outvoted anyway...

imho, a big no. i'd prefer to see subforums for specific apps or projects, rather than say all software issues fall into mac vs pc.

i can totaly understand the need, once you as an indervidual is in a more focused space, for a more streamlined working and information highway/practice but as far as i can see i think this perticular space would suffer from to much dis-seperation within its core structure, and how others veiw it, for this space is a great steping stone but i dont think its the end of the line ;)
(this is not ment to be disrispectfull to any one perticular veiw of the forums/central :) )

Although not immediatly useful, I learn from the Mac posts and it gives me insight into the platform. Were I ever to switch then I would benefit richly from what I've read.

yeah , i agree , we should have a forum just for platform flaming ..
or a stiky in general chat ... we all have fun in those.
this could be a good solution to avoid platform flaming in usefull threads ..
we all have our stressed moments , nothing like a good virtual flaming to waste negative energies ...

There's always the convention of bracketing your [MAC] before your post subject, so that people know where you're coming from. I much prefer a single forum, because I'm not so brand attached as to not want to know what's going on with other people. Hell, I might want to resurrect my Amiga and ask for help on that. I'm noticing more crossplatform software of late, and hopefully Freeframe plugs will all end up that way as well. I'd hate to miss some good information about AfterEffects or a new Freeframe plugset just because someone had to choose sides.
Perhaps a forum for the big debates.
Mac vs. PC
Laptop vs. Desktop
Sampling vs. Original content.
Call it
Us vs. Them
and let people go at it.
