One thing I have noticed is that there is no thread on hire equipment.
Between VJs and their own equipment or positive feedback from cheap and reliable hire companies.
I know this might start a commercial free for all from AV companies, and we don't want that do we.
Between competent VJ's i do not think that friendly hire rates would harm the industry.
I need to hire a 1000+lumen projector for Saturday evening
I only have ?50 in the budget and it is in London
Oh a video matrix is also needed, 8x8 switcher please, only another ?50 in the budget for that too.If you can help, send me a P.M. asap
thanks in advance
Todd

fraid our stuff is already booked out todd on saturday, but the idea of a thread/section for us V.J's to rent stuff out to each other is a great idea.

PSL, PSL, PSL.
We they were great with us at avit, you should get a matrix for them for ?45.

As I have said for AVit they were super helpfull, cheaper than other companies, and the gaves us 1000m of cable free of charge, good value in my book.

that is a great idea for a thread. Incidentally, I don't think many people in my neck of the woods will be reading this, but I'd be happy to lend/rent my video projectors to responsible people quite inexpensively when they are not in use by me. A friend that is doing work in the film industry actually recently told me to put together a list of all the equipment I have, and then when they need stuff for a shoot or whatever, they go to their standard rental outlets first, but when all that is gone, frequently sub-contract out equipment for very decent pricing (read: good for me) from independent renters like myself/me self-corp. A good potential plan for others with their local production scene I am sure!

Here in Mpls we rent each others' stuff all the time, either I'm renting an MX50 or another projector for a big show, or I'm renting out my MX20 or projectors for someone who doesn't have any, or we're collaborating or whatever. It works out nice and everybody gets better shows for cheaper, nobody really overlaps much equipment wise and it works out.

Yeah Steve, PSL will be largin it at next AVIT but maybe we should hold fire on recommending AV companies and prices. Maybe some companies have special deals, and we do not want to open the floodgates and have this forum being used as a site for AV companies to use as Ad space.
I prefer the VJ route on this one.

I agree. It would be good for VJs to hire/lend kit. I'm afraid we won't be able to help you on this occasion Todd, but I think it would be good to be hiring kit within the VJ community, as our pooled resources are huge (AVIT showed this).

AV hire companies have their place, but if one or two pieces of kit are needed on a small budget, then there are issues.

On a similar note, we have received a betamax tape for a gig next weekend, and although there is also VHS tapes, we could use taking a copy of it incase there is something different on it.
I'm hoping someone in the midlands has a betamax player that I could come round and use. PM me if you can help.

Hope someone can help you out Todd, maybe next time...

the main problem withhiring out kit to other vj's is insurance
weve found that dry hire insurance on video kit is prohibitively expensive and most av hire companies dont actually have insurance they just swallow any damage costs, hence the high price of hiring beamers
we originally planned to hire our beamers out but unfortunately the cost of having one of our crew accompany them(to satisfy the insurance criteria) means that the av companies can generally do it cheaper.

also tom are u sure its betamax and not beta sp?

Thanks for all your replies, nice to know there is support out there.
We needed 6 projectors and had 7 in total.
We even had a spare beamer down the road from APT who where working at the Drome.
Yes, there is an insurance issue here but most pple are willing to take the chance on recouping some cash for a nice priced piece of kit.
I have ?5000 insurance on anything I hire without its own insurance: which i must of course stipulate, and it costs but it is worth the peace of mind, and hassle before gigs.

We borrowed a beta SP for last W/E so it might be around for a while but they are so common you should have no problem.
