i primarily use isadora and vdmx for vjing. in the search for the best MAC codec i thought i'd start a discussion.

here's what i've noticed, 320x240 keyframe every frame 100% quality:

Cinepak : color is a bit off, seems like their isnt a good value range. FAST speed
DV : perfect image, definetly too slow and cumbersome for live use.
Animation : 80% quality 320x240, forum peeps seem to like this, but i find it makes extremely large files and runs very very slow
Motion JPEG A : nice image, good colors, however it also seems very very slow
DivX, 3ivx, Apple MP4 : hahahahahaha funny joke.

none of those: RT Photo-Jpeg

photo-jpeg was the best quality, lowest cpu overhead codec out there, and then Apple realised they needed exactly the same kind of codec as us for the real-time effects in FCP3 so they did their tests, chose photo-jpeg and very kindly alti-vec'd it (ie. G4 enhanced).

check out the MD3 codec thread for the most recent thread on this.

also the vdmx manual gives a fair outline of this stuff, and it goes for pretty much all realtime effects apps on the mac.
