Just saw this news story on the BBC website, had a bit of crossover appeal between art & vjing if you ask me...

Funny installation. And you're right it seems like a mixture between VideoArt and Vjing. But isn't Vjing also VideoArt?

I can't believe this guy can get such low level art, into such a prestiges place like the Institute of Contempary Art, when there are so many good VJ's and visual artist in the UK that don't get that kind of exposure now... I neither consider it VJing, nor Visual Art, as it seems this guy is just using video clips to get his music exposure...
If he would do something with those clips like say scratching the blink in real time, then he could claim it as VJing...

He isnt trying to claim its VJing. Frankly, this stuff is art to me, whether or not its good art or bad is subjective. He clearly set out to do something, he pulled it off, why does it matter what level of technology etc he put into it, or what level of skill/technical competance is required to achieve the results? It doesnt.

If you want to get expose in a gallery, follow this guide which I just made up:

1) Know the right people and play the game

2) Create something which has a theme or message or style that can be clearly seen by the audience. It doesnt really matter if they understand it, or even what their emotional response is (good or bad), just that they recognise it as something in its own right. Label it art, put a frame round it, stick it in a gallery, and it is art!

3) Give interviews or write blurb that explains what it is, what you intended to achieve and convey to the watcher. It doesnt matter if you talk complete shit, in fact that may help, just talk about it as if its art and yey as if by magic it is.

PS. I actually quite liked it too, it has a certain atmosphere, and the sleaze factor in the clinton one is pretty classy, nice choice of music :D

LOL elbows,
I have to admit, you can put a spin on most anything>>>:p

I have to agree with Exhale here, and just remind ppl that it isn't what you can do as an artist, but who you know as an artist..
This guy might have some okay music, I don't know, but his vids are neither inspiring, nor provocative enuf to do much for me...

I don't think looking at shitty internet compressed video of them is going to do them much justice. Obviously, they're just looped sections of publicly available footage. The interest is taking a public figure and focusing on something you usually don't focus on. Lord knows, I've seen much weaker subjects for installations. I was actually impressed that he had made music for them... when most concept art can just slide by on repackaging or re-interpreting something. Still, anybody actually heard the music from Argento's Opera? That's the part that turns me off.

elbows you're kinda right. Like u I liked it.
and for the others:

It may be that VJ's creat better loops but they don't use them in the same way, like this artist.
VJ's "mostly" use their clips for Vjing and not for "Arting".

i have been to see it, and it was amazing, there were 4 screens, and the good bit not mentioned in the bbc article was the fully synched ambient audio in 5.1 sound for each screen

well worth seeing

there is an interesting conceptual side to this art piece that in my eyes most video art and 99% of vjing don't have. its not about whose got the coolest eyecandy that gets you into these exhibits, its the ideas, thoughts, and execution that do.

though i have seen lots of really bad "interactive" video art pieces...
